How Diwali muhurats are decided
A festival is tied to a tithi, the lunar day, and a tithi does not begin at midnight. It can start at eleven in the morning and end the next afternoon. So the scriptures ask a second question: at which part of the day must that tithi be present? For Dhanteras and Lakshmi Puja the answer is Pradosh Kaal, the first stretch of night after sunset. For Bhai Dooj it is Aparahna, the afternoon. For Labh Pancham it is sunrise.
Because sunset and sunrise happen at different moments in different cities, the same festival can land on different calendar dates in India and abroad. That is why every timing on this page is worked out for the city you choose, not copied from a single national calendar.
What makes a window the best one
For Lakshmi Puja and Dhanteras, the preferred window is the part of Pradosh Kaal when a fixed sign, Vrishabha, is rising. A fixed Lagna is chosen so that prosperity stays in the home. For Chopda Pujan, traders follow the Shubh, Labh and Amrit Choghadiya. Every window is then checked against Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, Gulika Kaal and Bhadra, and any overlapping part is removed before the window is shown.
Questions people ask
When is Diwali in 2026?
Diwali Lakshmi Puja in 2026 falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026 in Ahmedabad. The best muhurat there is 6:24 PM to 8:22 PM. Choose your city above for local timings.
Why do Diwali dates differ between India and other countries?
The festival day depends on which tithi is present at local sunset or in the local afternoon. Since those moments differ by city, the tithi can qualify on one calendar date in India and on the previous or next date in the USA, UK or Australia.
Is Rahu Kaal checked in these timings?
Yes. Every window is cleared of Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, Gulika Kaal and Bhadra for your city before it is shown.
Are these timings free?
Yes. Festival timings are free for every city and need no birth details.
Family and regional customs can differ, so confirm with your family priest where in doubt.
