Why the puja is done after sunset

Lakshmi Puja belongs to the Amavasya of the Ashwin month, and it is observed on the evening when Amavasya is present during Pradosh Kaal. Pradosh is the first fifth of the night, roughly two and a half hours from sunset. This is why the puja is an evening ritual in every region.

Why Vrishabha Lagna is preferred

Within Pradosh, families wait for a fixed sign to rise. Vrishabha is the fixed sign that rises in the evening at this time of year, and the overlap of Pradosh Kaal and Vrishabha Lagna is taken as the best window. Those who keep a midnight puja use Mahanishita Kaal, and Simha Lagna gives a second fixed-sign window late at night.

How the puja is done

  1. Light the lamps at the entrance before the muhurat begins.
  2. Set the altar with Ganesh on the left and Lakshmi on the right, on a red cloth.
  3. Begin with Ganesh puja, then Lakshmi puja, within the best window.
  4. Offer new coins, sweets and the account books if you keep them at home.
  5. Close with aarti and keep one lamp burning through the night.
