Why Dhanteras is kept on Trayodashi evening
Dhanteras is Dhan Trayodashi, the thirteenth tithi of the dark fortnight. Tradition holds that Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods, appeared on this tithi during the churning of the ocean, carrying the pot of nectar. The day is observed when Trayodashi is present during Pradosh Kaal, the first part of the night after sunset.

The preferred window is Pradosh Kaal while Vrishabha, a fixed sign, is rising. Purchases of gold, silver, utensils or a new account book made in this window are considered lasting. Lakshmi-Kuber puja is done in the same window.
How the puja is done
- Clean the entrance and draw a small rangoli with Lakshmi footprints facing inward.
- Bring home the new purchase before the puja and place it at the altar.
- Offer puja to Dhanvantari, Lakshmi and Kuber within the muhurat.
- After sunset, light one lamp facing south at the entrance as the Yama Deep.
